Safe Driver

Justin wasn't sure exactly what had prompted him to agree to teach Wade how to drive. He knew Wade needed to know how to do it, and at the time it had sounded fun.

Now, as Wade sped around an empty, paved lot, Justin wasn't so sure. Swallowing, his hands moved down to grip his seat.

Wade looked over at Justin and laughed at the expression on Justin‘s face. He pushed his foot down on the petal a little more, speeding up.

Justin gripped the seat tightly as Wade turned sharply. Wade, enjoying himself too much, didn't notice Justin's new expression of panic.

"Wade, maybe you should slow down a little bit."

Wade glanced at Justin. "Why? We have this whole place to ourselves, I'm not going to hit anyone. And look around. It's just flat pavement. I'm not going to run into anything. Trust me, babe." Justin continued to grip the seat as Wade started up again.

"There are rules to driving. Like following the speed limit, for instance," Justin told him.

Wade grinned and turned sharply again, laughing as Justin gasped and started pushing an imaginary brake.

"You worry too much, love," Wade said.

"No, no. I worry exactly the right amount."

Wade smiled to himself and pushed down on the brake, stopping the car abruptly. Both Justin and Wade lurched forward.

"Now see, if we hadn't had our seatbelts on, you could've hit your head and-" Wade cut Justin off by pressing a finger to his lips.

"Justin... you are wonderful. I couldn't have asked for a better driving teacher. I'm not going to be reckless, I promise. I will be the most careful driver on the road. Well," Wade grinned, "next to you."

Justin smiled despite himself. "You promise me you'll be careful and safe?"

Wade held out his pinky and grinned. "Pinky swear."

Justin laughed and hooked pinkies with Wade.

Wade leaned in and kissed Justin quickly. "I love you."

"I love you ahhh!"

Justin's hands were once again gripping the seat as Wade pushed down on the petal and sped off.

Justin waited outside of the DMV, tapping his hands on the steering wheel of his Benz, occasionally glancing at the doors to see if Wade would come through them.

They'd been working on Wade's driving for about a month. Justin still felt like Wade was a little reckless and didn't exactly follow all the rules of the road, but then he'd remember Wade's promise to him and somehow it made him feel better.

Looking over at the doors again, he saw Wade come bounding out, a look of joy on his face. As he spotted Justin, he started running towards the car, and Justin got out, walking over to meet him.

Wade leapt into Justin's arms and hugged him tightly. "I did it!" he exclaimed. Letting go of Justin, he pulled back and showed him his brand new license, holding it in front of Justin's face.

"Licensed driver, baby!"

Justin grinned and took the license from Wade. "That's a cute picture. Can they get me a copy?"

Wade rolled his eyes with a grin and took his license from Justin. "Give me the keys, mister, I'm driving us home."

Justin smiled and dangled them in front of Wade. "Are you sure they knew what they were getting into by giving you that license?"

Wade grabbed for the keys and Justin moved them out of reach, laughing.

"Justin!" Wade exclaimed, trying again.

"What do I get if I let you have them?" Justin asked, a suggestive grin on his face.

Wade smirked at him, "Oh trust me, I'll make it well worth your while."

Justin laughed. "Well, I certainly can't resist you, can I?" He tossed his keys to Wade and Wade caught them, letting out a whoop of joy.

Justin just shook his head with a smile, getting in on the passenger side.

Wade searched through the dresser in his and Justin’s bedroom, looking for Justin’s wallet. After moment, he grinned triumphantly and pulled it out, opening it up. He took out Justin’s license and set the wallet down. Then he pulled out his own license.

He held the two licenses up, pictures facing each other. "Hello Justin. Why hello Wade. How are you doing? I'm great, how are you? Oh, I'm just fine. You look so pretty today. Oh really? So do you. I love you. I love you too." Then Wade pushed the licenses together and made kissing noises.

Justin leaned against the doorway with a smile, watching an unaware Wade.

“Oh Justin, I just love your hot, sexy body so much. Oh Wade, you make me so hot. Oh Justin… oh baby, come get it. Rawr!

Justin couldn’t fight back a laugh. Wade jumped and looked over at Justin, grinning sheepishly.

“So, were they about to get it on?” Justin asked, walking over to Wade.

Wade nodded. “Oh yes. They’re very distressed about being interrupted.”

Justin looked at the licenses. “Poor things.”

Wade nodded. “Yes. It’s very sad for them.”

“Well, maybe we should leave them alone,” Justin said.

Wade looked at the licenses. “Yes. Perhaps.”

Justin grinned and pulled Wade close to him. “You’re adorable.”

Wade laughed. “I know.”

“Maybe we should finish what those licenses started?” Justin suggested.

“Is sex all you think about?”

“Pretty much, yeah.”

Wade looked at Justin. “Yeah, me too.”

Justin smiled and kissed Wade. Wade tossed the licenses aside and wrapped his arms around Justin, deepening the kiss as they fell onto the bed.

Since that first drive home in Justin's Benz, Wade had become addicted. He always asked Justin if he could drive it. Justin was a little wary at first, because Wade's driving skills were still a little rough. However, all Wade had to do was look at Justin with those eyes of his, pleading with him, and Justin caved in an instant.

So when Wade came downstairs, asking Justin if he could take the car and run to the store really fast, Justin didn't really think anything of it. He handed Wade the keys and Wade had kissed him on the cheek and gone out the door, the always present excitement in his step whenever he knew he was going out to drive.

Justin was making dinner for them, so at first he didn’t really notice how much time had gone by. Then it occurred to him that it had been a while and Wade was still gone. He figured that Wade had probably just wanted to go driving around a bit, so he picked up the phone and dialed Wade’s cell phone. And there was no answer.

That worried him a little.

He finished cooking dinner and set the table. Still no Wade.

He sat down at the table and waited.

No Wade.

As every minute passed, Justin’s worry increased. He tried to tell himself that Wade just lost track of time. Wade had some extra errands to run. He was just running late.

When an hour turned into two and two turned into three, Justin started entertaining more terrible scenarios. Something terrible had happened to Wade. Wade was hurt somewhere and couldn’t call him. Or maybe… no.

But that little nagging doubt wouldn’t let Justin dismiss the possibility that maybe Wade had just… left him.

Justin shook his head. “Stop it, Timberlake. He wouldn’t do that. He loves you.”

At that moment the phone rang. Justin jumped, then hurried over, picking it up. “Hello?”

“Is this Justin Timberlake.”

Ignoring the sinking feeling when he heard a voice that wasn’t Wade’s , Justin responded with, “Who wants to know?”

“I’m calling from University Hospital. Do you know a Wade Robson?”

Justin gripped the phone. “Yes.”

“I’m calling to let you know that he was a car accident this evening.”

Justin closed his eyes and tried not to let the phone drop from his now shaking hand.

“He‘s been injured. Nothing fatal, as far as we can tell. The car he was driving is totaled.”

Justin swallowed, taking several moments before he spoke. “I… I told him to be careful. He… he promised me. He’s not always the most careful driver, I…”

“Sir,” the man interrupted, “the other driver was drunk.”

Justin choked back a sob. “Oh God.”

“Will you be able to get here?”

“Yeah… yeah, I’ll be there.” Justin hung up the phone and turned, sitting down slowly in one of the kitchen chairs.

“Oh God…” He put his head into his hands and slumped into the chair. “Oh God, oh God, oh God. He’s… he’s hurt and he’s… oh God.”

Justin sat there for a moment, before standing up, grabbing the keys to Wade’s Jetta, and hurrying out the door.

When Justin walked into Wade’s hospital room, Wade was laying there, TV remote in his hand, flipping through the channels. He had his leg propped up, with a bandage over it, and Justin couldn’t tell if it was broken or not. Cuts and bruises were visible all over Wade’s arms and face. There was a large, white bandage on Wade’s forehead and Justin knew there was a cut there, probably sewn shut with stitches.

Wade looked over. “Justin,” he said, and Justin thought Wade seemed a little… frightened.

Justin walked over to the chair next to Wade’s bed and sat down, taking Wade’s hand, kissing it gently.

“I’m sorry,” Wade whispered, “I didn’t mean to crash your car, I know how much you love that car, I’m so sorry…” Wade’s eyes filled with tears and Justin felt his heart breaking.

“I’ll replace it, Justin, I swear. I’ll-”

“No,” Justin said, cutting him off. “Wade, God, please don’t worry about the stupid car. I’m just… I’m so glad you’re ok.”

Wade swallowed. “I was so scared. I thought… I thought…” Wade couldn’t continue as he broke down into tears. Justin put his arms around Wade gently, careful not to hurt him.

“I thought it was going to die… and that I would never get the chance to see you one last time, or tell you… tell you how much I love you,” Wade whispered, tears still falling down his face. “And that you’d be mad at me… because… because I broke my promise to you.”

Justin closed his eyes, fighting back images of Wade laying in the wreckage, alone, scared, dying, thinking Justin would be angry with him for getting into the accident, and suddenly he could feel his own eyes tearing up.

“Shh. You’re ok, it’s gonna be ok,” Justin told him. “You didn’t break your promise. I know that it wasn’t your fault. I know that you’re a good driver. I trust you. Shh. It’s gonna be all right.”

Wade nodded and after a minute pulled away, wiping his eyes. He offered Justin a tiny smile. “Thank you for being here.”

“Where else would I be?” Justin asked, returning the smile.

Wade, still smiling, squeezed Justin’s hand. “My leg is broken,” he said after a moment. “And I had to get stitches in my forehead. Eight of them.”

Justin nodded and kissed Wade’s hand again. “It’ll be ok. I’ll take care of you.”

Wade smiled and closed his eyes. “You’re so good to me.”

“I love you.”

“Love you too,” Wade mumbled sleepily.

“Go to sleep, baby,” Justin said, pulling the covers up around Wade.

“Be here when I wake up?”

Justin leaned in and kissed the top of Wade’s head. “I promise.”

Wade smiled. “M’kay.”

Justin, still holding Wade’s hand, watched as he fell asleep.

“Wade! Come down here!” Justin called.

“Ok, give me a minute,” Wade said, reaching for his crutches. Wade had been home from the hospital for almost two weeks and he wasn’t all that great with his crutches.

“Hurry, hurry!”

“Justin, I’m not exactly Mr. Speedy here,” Wade told him as he hobbled down the stairs to Justin.

“Come on,” Justin said, exasperated.

“What?” Wade asked as he got down to Justin.

Justin grinned. “Follow me.”

Justin walked outside through the front door and Wade followed, stopping as he saw what was sitting in the driveway.

“Justin, it’s… that’s your Benz. You had it repaired! It’s your Benz!”

Justin smiled at Wade. “Not anymore.”

Wade watched as Justin reached into his pocket and pulled out the keys, handing them to Wade.

“I…” Wade started.

“You’ve earned it. It’s yours.”

“But you… what will you drive?”

Justin laughed. “I have like five other cars, babe. I’ll be fine. I know how much you love that car, and well… I love you, so…” Justin blushed slightly.

Wade smiled. “This is so sweet. I… thank you.”

“You’re welcome. You just have to promise me something.”

“And what’s that?” Wade asked.

Justin grinned. “I get to go on the first drive.”

Wade smiled and held out his pinky, hooking it with Justin's.

“It’s a deal.”
